Quercetin is a plant compound, classified as a flavonoid, found in fruits, vegetables and herbs. Quercetin is the most common flavonoid found in foods and is best absorbed when paired with dietary fat. A nutritious diet can provide up to 13 mg of quercetin daily through various food sources including:

  • Apples
  • Grapes
  • Berries
  • Citrus
  • Cherries
  • Broccoli
  • Onions
  • Capers
  • Green tea
  • Coffee
  • Red wine

Health Benefits of Quercetin: Immune support

Flavonoids are well known for their ability to act like antioxidants in the body, protecting individuals from free radicals and inflammation—both of which contribute to the onset of chronic disease. In a study of women with rheumatoid arthritis, the effects of quercetin supplementation on inflammation and disease severity were evaluated. Supplementation with quercetin for eight weeks significantly reduced early morning stiffness, morning pain and after-activity pain in individuals with rheumatoid arthritis.

Clinical research on Quercefit® quercetin phytosome—the most readily absorbable form of quercetin and the form contained in Cooper Complete Quercetin Complex—revealed a reduction in frequency and length of hospitalizations as well as less respiratory failure, ICU transfers and number of deaths. These findings suggest quercetin supplementation in combination with standard care in the early stages of viral infection could contribute to the reduction of symptoms and disease severity. In a study of athletes who exercised intensely for a two-week period, it was found those who were supplemented with quercetin had a reduced incidence of upper respiratory tract infections compared to the placebo group.

Cooper Clinic Platinum Physician Michael Chapman, MD, shares quercetin is thought to have direct virucidal properties, meaning it can destroy or inactivate viruses. “Quercetin is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent but should be used with caution in patients with hypothyroidism, and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels should be monitored.”

Serving as a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, quercetin is believed to act as a zinc ionophore, binding itself to zinc ions and releasing them in cell membranes, which is especially important with zinc being a critical component of both our innate and adaptive immune systems.

Exercise Recovery

Quercetin supplementation has also been shown to enhance physical performance as well as accelerate muscle recovery. In a controlled study on healthy triathletes, more than 11% of the athletes who took one tablet of 250 mg Quercefit® quercetin phytosome twice daily saw a reduction in their race times after 14 days of supplementation. Athletes saw a reduction in post-run muscular pain, cramps, and post-exercise recovery time. Also, one hour after their final run, athletes demonstrated lower oxidative stress levels, which have been associated with delayed recovery from exercise fatigue. This is why quercetin health benefits include exercise recovery.

Allergy Support

Allergy sufferers may now be able to find symptom relief through quercetin supplementation. Individuals with mild to moderate asthmatic attacks and rhinitis who took Quercefit® quercetin phytosome daily reported a significant reduction in symptom discomfort.

Additionally, a 2019 study evaluated the effects of quercetin formulated with quercetin phytosome in healthy individuals with mild to moderate asthma or rhinitis. Those who supplemented with quercetin phytosome showed superior results, preventing the frequency of attacks and effects, decreasing the use of inhalers, nasal drops, and rescue medications and improving overall asthma and rhinitis.

Improved Gut Health

Microbiota play an essential role in metabolic, nutritional, physiological and immunological processes. Quercetin has gained interest in aiding gut function, reducing inflammation and improving gut microbiota. Quercetin health benefits include enhanced intestinal gut barrier function, reduced inflammation and protection from disease. Although further research still needs to be conducted, this emerging research shows promising results for improving gut health.

Health Benefits of Quercetin: Blood Pressure Reduction

Research also shows quercetin may help improve blood pressure. A 12-week study reviewing seven trials, which included 587 individuals who were prehypertensive and hypertensive, showed a significant reduction in blood pressure after consistent quercetin supplementation. It’s important to know the biggest reductions were in randomized controlled trials with doses of at least 500 mg per day, with an average 4.45 mm Hg reduction in systolic and 2.98 mm Hg reduction in diastolic blood pressure. Cooper Complete Quercetin Complex contains 250 mg of quercetin in the more highly absorbable Quercefit® quercetin phytosome form.

Bromelain and Quercetin

Bromelain is a digestive enzyme that comes from the lower stems of a pineapple plant. Historically, bromelain has been used by natives of Central and South America for digestive disorders but is now known for also reducing pain and swelling, especially in the sinuses, gums and other parts of the body after injury. Preliminary research has shown bromelain can aid in reducing nasal swelling, removing dead skin from burns and reducing pain after wisdom tooth surgery. Cooper Complete’s Quercetin Complex and Joint Health supplements both contain 100 mg of bromelain (ananas comosus, pineapple stem) which acts as a natural anti-inflammatory.

Quercetin For Chronic Prostatitis

The National Institute of Health explains chronic prostatitis syndromes—inflammation of the prostate—are common disorders with few effective therapies. With prostatitis, men commonly experience chronic pelvic pain. In a study of men with chronic pelvic pain, participants received either a placebo or quercetin twice daily for one month. Those who took the quercetin supplement reported symptom improvement and reduced pain. Further research is needed on quercetin health benefits for improving prostatitis symptoms.

Cooper Complete Quercetin Complex

Cooper Complete® Quercetin Complex combines 250 mg of quercetin with bromelain and vitamin C to support cardio-metabolic function, a healthy gastrointestinal tract and immune health. Now, with Cooper Complete’s new formula containing the branded form of quercetin—Quercefit® quercetin phytosome—the supplement is in its most readily absorbable form. Blood plasma tests have shown the updated formula increases concentrated quercetin levels in the blood by 20-fold compared to standard quercetin. Quercetin Complex is specifically tailored to meet your health and wellness needs—helping promote exercise recovery and relieve seasonal allergy discomfort among other things.

With more research emerging, the results show quercetin’s beneficial effect in helping minimize inflammation, increase immunity, enhance exercise recovery and reduce allergy symptoms and blood pressure levels.
