Covering All Bases with the Adaptive Motion Trainer

The Precor® Adaptive Motion Trainer (AMT) is an integral part of the fitness fleet at Cooper Fitness Center. The machine is a variation of the elliptical, but it is so much more than an elliptical. With the AMT, you can adapt the motion as you go—transitioning from stepping to striding to sprinting; forwards to backwards; targeting upper or lower body independently. The AMT is built in such a way that you can practice strength training or stretching exercises off the back of the machine.

When you’re short on time, but want to get in a well-rounded workout, the AMT should be your go-to fitness tool.

The AMT is different from standard treadmills and ellipticals in a number of ways, explains Mary Edwards, Fitness Director at Cooper Fitness Center. Here are a few of the differences:

  • With the AMT, the user can change both incline and stride length. With an elliptical or treadmill, you can change the incline, but cannot adjust stride length.
  •  Provides a non-weight bearing option for users with orthopedic issues, such as knee or low back problems. “It’s a great option because there is minimal, if any, pounding that occurs.”
  • Because of the versatility of the machine, workouts stay stimulating, and the user is able to continually make improvement in different areas of the body because it can be used in so many different ways.
  • Offers more than a cardiovascular workout. The AMT allows the user to incorporate strength and aerobic exercises into his or her routine.
  • Allows user to target specific muscle groups, such as the lower body, upper body, glutes and core.

The biggest benefit of the AMT, said Edwards, is the ability to be more efficient with a continuous flow of both cardio and strength exercises.
